Our Legacy
Pharmacy instruction at Howard University began in the "Department of Medicine" in 1868. The initial course, held in the evening, offered students "knowledge of the art and science of pharmacy." The first student was graduated in 1870 and the program was re-instated on February 2002. Since the reinstatement, the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences produced a number of proud graduates and prepares students for Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
Vision Statement
The vision of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences is to become internationally recognized for innovative pharmaceutical sciences education and research through innovative teaching, training, and creative research efforts that provide effective solutions to changing and challenging clinical therapeutic problems.
Mission Statement
The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences seeks to provide Ph. D. education of excellent quality to students with high academic, scholarship and leadership potential and to equip the students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities necessary to become pharmaceutical scientists and/or educators to meet the changing demands of the society. Our overall objective is to produce experts who will lead the world's industries, academic and research institutions to extend the frontiers of Pharmaceutical Sciences, foster innovation and progress in translational and evidence based research, and improve human therapies to benefit patient quality of life.
Areas of specialization
The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences is offered by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, in conjunction with the Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy Sciences, in the College of Pharmacy, Howard University. Due to its location in Washington, DC, the program is able to seek collaborations with governmental agencies as well as other research institutions for training its students. The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences comprises the following areas of specialization:
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Pharmaceutics
- Pharmacy Administration
Specifically, there is a research focus in:
- Pharmaceutics with emphasis
- on drug delivery (pharmaceutical dosage form design) and nanotechnology
- Pharmacokinetics with emphasis in Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling, preclinical simulation, drug metabolism and disposition studies, modeling methodology for analysis of combined pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data to improve clinical drug development and trial design,
- Pharmaceutical Chemistry with emphasis on medicinal chemistry, computational modeling and natural products
- Pharmacy administration with emphasis on pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, socio-cultural behavioral, prevention, and health services research with a concentration in health disparities and global issues related to therapeutics and public health.
